I understand what you mean, but the root of the problem is that Spelling Checkers are not enough by themselves. They can only suggest words they have in them, so even the best will give you the wrong words in some situations. For example, I constantly see "where" & "were", "then" & "than" and several other non-homonym words used incorrectly. The basic problem there is that all four words are spelled correctly, but used improperly. Spelling Checkers ONLY check spelling! A Grammar Checker ― if used properly ― will catch such mistakes and ― IF it has the words you want ― suggest the proper replacement. I'm seeing fewer grammar checkers ― probably because people don't like getting told they are wrong that often ― and a wide split between really good and really bad Spell Checkers, with almost none in between.
I haven't tried this Spell Checker, so I can't say, yet, if it is good or bad, but I hope it is good. Now, if we could get a good grammar checker to go with it and the thesaurus, we would be set! =^_^=
For a grammar checker use: https://languagetool.org/
Hello!
All spellers use the Hunspell "engine" created my Németh László.
Only he can change the way it works.
The only thing I can do is add/remove words.
This whole idea of various versions of English seems simple enough to overcome. I have said for many years: "Americans speak "American", Australians speak "Ausie" and so on. ONLY THE BRITS SPEAK ENGLISH! So, why not just re-name those versions of "English" to be compatible with the country they represent?
hard to see the text on this extension site so I used my desktop and found that the link for the lastest extension tries to get a file that has been removed. I found other oxt files and saved to them to SD card and will install them to my tiny netbook. Now it's chimp simple to me.
I luv U2 Collette the Cat and U2 Snide Clyde.
Hello!!!
After re-uploading and now tried again and it works!
Please try again and write here the results.
I have mailed the mailing list, since I too tried to download and it says the file is not found.
I tried to re-upload without success.
this is a great add on but it seems the it is missing a English GB Thesaurus
Hello!
The other day I was checking the Thesaurus and it seems to have words both for GB and US and that is probably one of the reasons why it is 18 MB big.
Not sure if there is a more recent version of it... I must ask someone about it.
I checked my extensions and it listed version 2010.03.16, so I tried updating again even though it said it was already installed. Still, the extension says the 2010.03.16 version. I even tried restarting OpenOffice. Shouldn't the 2013 version be listed? - See more at: http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/english-dictionaries-apache-openoffice#comment-form
Hi!
You are probably using an old version of OpenOffice, since the most recent brings 2014 English Dictionaries.
And, if you click on the big green button "Download Extension" here above it would download the latest.
I try to update the dictionaries monthly.
If your extension manager is unresponsive (as mine), here is the work around.
1) Open Open Office and click on New Text Document
2) Click on the pull-down-menu titled Tools
3) Click on Extension Manager
4) At the centre-bottom position, Click on "Add"
5) Click on "Downloads" (default download location for most web browsers)
6) Click on dict-en.oxt (or any relevant .oxt version) and click open
7) Complete.
IF THE LATEST VERSION DOES NOT APPEAR DO THE FOLLOWING:
1) Open Open Office and click on New Text Document
2) Click on the pull-down-menu titled Tools
3) Click on Extension Manager
4) CLICK ON THE DICTIONARY NAME AND CLICK REMOVE AND OK
5) At the centre-bottom position, Click on "Add"
6) Click on "Downloads" (default download location for most web browsers)
7) Click on dict-en.oxt (or any relevant .oxt version) and click open
8) Complete by clicking "For all users" and "Close".
Hope this helps.
The word 'meerkat' appears to be missing from the en-GB and en-US dictionaries. How can missing words be added?
Hello!
I have just added it to en_GB, along with similar kinds:
4658) meerkat (+plural)
4659) tamarin (+plural)
4660) mara (+plural)
4661) suricate (+plural)
It will be available in the monthly update.
Please contact Kevin Atkinson for him to add to en_US and en_CA (there are two links here with his contacts):

Kind regards,
I have never come across such a strange updating operation. One is never quite sure if it has updated or not? I am redirected to another page, which thanks me for updating... then asks me to download?!? There is not any clear direction. Open office assume that I know what they know, which is confusing and unfair to assume. I am still informed that there is an update for spelling and hyphen etc., which I thought I had just updated? I go round and round in circles, simply because I have no clear information on what has/or has not been updated. Why do open office do this?
Please simply offer information as to the extension having been updated on a different webpage PLEASE.
This is the difference between open office and MW. They are so professional. With simple instructions and clarity. I accidentally wiped my MW from my PC, otherwise I would not be using this micky mouse operation.
I have asked for English spelling - what do I receive when writing my academic essays? American language spelling. Lovely stuff - well done open office.
I love it when people complain about FREE stuff that OTHER PEOPLE spend their own time creating and updating. Perhaps you should specify "British" since it clearly specifies that in the download info. The UK does not own a patent on the English language; there are Canadian, Australian, U.S. and other dialects. When you say "English," you have to specify which dialect. Also, please do post here when you come up with your own BETTER version of a FREEWARE office suite. I'd love to check it out. And if you accidentally wiped your MW from your drive, may I suggest the problem here may lie with your own less-than-perfected technical know-how? Of curse, if you despise OO so much, you could also pony up the money and replace MW. Oh, and it's "Mickey Mouse," no matter which "English" you speak.
@Collette the Cat:
I don't know David Neame. I don't know his technical know-how. I don't even know if English is his native language.
Therefore, when I read his complaint, I can only assume that he
- needs to get his job done
- is an end-user who knows the basics to accomplish just that
- needs to keep the focus on his job
- has a less-than-perfected knowledge to deal with OO's update-methods and doesn't have the time to learn or spend on that
- is feeling frustrated
- is currently using OO because he made the mistake of wiping MW from his PC
That's about it. I would never assume more than that.
Now, I am not trying to stand up for David (I assume he could do it if he considers that your comments deserve an answer).
On the other hand, I certainly do appreciate and enjoy the hard and selfless work of the hundreds, if not thousands, of professionals who managed to provide an alternative to MS's office-suite.
Nevertheless, I feel as frustrated as David might have felt, and I perceive that your comments are unnecessarily harsh and derogatory against one of the millions of end-users out there, end-users like myself, end-users that should not be expected to learn and deal with more than what is strictly needed to get our job done.
It's been several months that this little "problem" has appeared.
Around the end of every month, OpenOffice displays its "green arrow" telling us that an update to this extension is available, but when we download or when we visit the webpage, no update is there. I think it's because the update is already uploaded to the server but it's not shown as available in the "front-end". It's not a big deal, but it's quite confusing for people.
I am trying sooo hard to figure out what everyone is saying and how to install or download this or that and I can't get it. I am using Chrome and for school purposes I really need to have the spell check. Can anyone PATIENTLY walk me through step by step to get this working.
This is how it worked for me:
- Click on the green "Download extension" button at the top of this page.
- This will start the download process for the file "dict-en.zip".
- You will be taken to another page.
- Wait until you are prompted to "Open", "Save" or "Save As".
- Click on "Save As".
- You will see a "Save As" window.
- Select your computer's "Desktop" as the target for the file
- Close your browser when the download completes
- Open OpenOffice and click to start a new document (Text Document, Spreadsheet, any will do)
- Click on the menu, on "Tools" > "Extension Manager"
- If you see an extension "English spelling and hyphenation dictionaries and thesaurus", click on "Remove", and on "Ok" to confirm
- Now, click on "Add"
- On the "Add extension(s)" window, navigate to your computer's desktop and "Open" the file you just saved ("dict-en.zip")
- This starts the installation process for the new/updated extension
- Click on "Close"
- That's it.
I have Win7 and have been running OO for two years without a spellcheck. I tried loading it again today.
Instead of "dict-en.zip" the file "dict-en.oxt appears on my desktop. Any attempts to load dict-en.oct fail unless you load it administrator. Problem. As you start OO NOT as administrator, the dict-en.oxt appears as locked even though you selected for all users.
Does this article help?
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Administration_Guide/Usin...
Running as ADMIN did change things. It will now install without the error message. I have set the options to English (USA) but anything I type ("The " for example) is not in the dictionary. More trial and error continues. I also loaded en-us.oxt but that changes nothing.
like many here, i had pretty much given up on getting the english dictionary to work. i was getting the same "does not exist" error. today i fixed the problem for myself and i hope this might help others.
my error basically said something to this effect: "file: C:\Users\Daniel\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\uno_packages\cache\uno_packages\sv8ijdh.tmp_\dict-en.oxt does not exist."
so i opened a windows explorer window and decided to navigate to that location to see what, if anything, was there. the final folder called "sv8ijdh.tmp_" didn't exist, so i created it, copied the dictionary file "dict-en.oxt" into this folder then double clicked on it in that location. BINGO. it launched the extension manager and installed the dictionary and now spell check works correctly for me in all OpenOffice apps.
here's a step by step:
1. open a windows explorer (or other file navigation) window
2. navigate to C:\Users\XusernameX\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\uno_packages\cache\uno_packages
-in this location the part that reads "XusernameX" will depend on you and your computer. Mine was my name. Yours will be different.
3. if it doesn't already exist, create a new directory inside the "uno_packages" folder named "sv8ijdh.tmp_"
4. place the dictionary file "dict-en.oxt" inside this newly created folder
5. execute the dictionary file from that location (double click it or how ever you do that on your computer)
at this point, the OpenOffice extension manager should open. i did get a warning something to the effect of "an earlier version of this extension doesn't exist" or something. i clicked "OK" or whatever affirmative option there was to allow the install to continue.
and done.
i hope this helps others. i don't check in here very often, so if you ask me a question in response, i apologize if i'm long in responding. perhaps others will chime in and help. i'm not a programmer, i'm a graphic designer with basic knowledge of file structure. my first computer was a pre-windows DOS command line monster. i don't know what my solution means in terms of what's wrong in the install package or process. i just know that my spell check works again and i'm very happy.
good luck!
I concur with Richard James. I stopped using English spell-check some time ago. Today I saw an alert that a new version of the dictionary is available for download and followed my nose to the same error message that Charles Glidden received. AOO's Extension Manager recognizes the existence of dict-en.oxt 2014.07.01.
I might also request that the board ban "Clyde". His comments are snide, unhelpful, and frankly ignorant.
Yes, I am experiencing this same exact problem. I'm using Windows 7 Home I keep getting the message that the "file doesn't exist". when I try to add the dictionary extension.
hello. i was able to fix this same problem. i posted my step by step on this page. take a look and see if my solution will work for you too.
Hello!
I too had difficulties downloading 2014.09.01 as the download button always points to a general extensions page.
I tried asking for help in the mailing list but the replies I got was that it worked for them.
Not sure if it is a Firefox 32 issue in my Windows 8.1.
I tried downloading from a Virtual Machine with Ubuntu 14.04 and Firefox 31 and it worked as it should.
This is very strange. I will post again in the mailing list.
My spell-checker also stopped working some time ago, as described by others, underlining everything. I just downloaded this new extension and tried to install then add on, but it keeps giving me an incomprehensible error message (I couldn't copy it) saying something (to do wth unopackages) doesn't exist. I already tried other suggestions to do with user profiles and deleting these and previous dic files, but still the same. Would be good to get this sorted.

I have written code to use the thesaurus files. I am getting sketchy results with the thesaurus. Sometimes I get results (both meanings and synonyms) but more often than not no results are provided even though I can see the word in the .dat file. For instance, I get results for "defended" but not for "house" or "government" or many many others. I am using NHunspell 1.1.1.0 (have also tried 1.1.1.1). I have tried several versions of the English OpenOffices downloads. Very bizarre! Does anyone have any idea what is happening?
I'm with Bud... I tried opening it as a zip file and was met with an array of choices that did not include opening zip files. I tried opening some of the non-Text files in the unzipped file, but that didn't work either (it either failed or opened as a readable file). What am I supposed to do with this thing?
Hi friend. If downloaded correctly, just change the extension file from .zip to .oxt and it is done. Now AOO can recognize it is an extension (double click it or in Open Office go to "File"-> "Open" and select that .oxt file. I think someone forgot to change that before uploading.
Hello!
I tried to download both from the big "Download Extension" button and from the smaller one.
Both downloaded the "dict-en.oxt" file.
At least for the 2014-06-01 version.
Where is the ZIP one?
It's not hard or complicated at all. Not AOO's fault you can't follow something as easy as downloading a file and clicking on it.
The file being downloaded is an .oxt file - a file extensions of AOO that is an executable. As long as you have AOO installed, all you have to do is click the .oxt file and it will open AOO asking if you're sure you want to apply or add the extension.
With my Win7 system the Extension Manager window opens when I click on the dict-en.oxt file and the remains blank. Then I get the Not Responding message. . The dict-en.oct file cannot be run by right clicking to run as ADMINISTRATOR. You need to run it as Administrator to avoid the errors. (Right click, run OO as Administrator and then add dict-en.oxt.)
Problem is, unless I run it ALWAYS as Admin, it has a lock by the dict-en, EVEN though I select all users.
Rudeness is neither helpful nor excusable. Castigating others whose expertise level may be different from yours violates the spirit of users helping users.
Completely agree with you, Patricia.
I opened Openoffice on my netbook and there was a popup saying there is a dictionary update and to click to install. it takes me to a webpage to download so I do that and download to my download folder and then I didn't know what to do after that. I read that one opens the downloaded file with openoffice but it just takes me back to the update extension window with the install button. WHY can't this be simpler? how did everyone else not seem to have a problem like I'm having? Some programs just update so easily. I could figure it out of you said o drop the file in a certain folder but now this just has to loop around and bug the crap out of me. Grrrr
And it doesn't matter. Look at my comment to William below. It's incredibly simple and I think you may have done it, but you're creating the problem yourself. Go to your extensions and check the version. If the number and text match, you're fine. If not, don't get click happy or frustrated and just follow my instructions. It really couldn't be any simpler.
once i know how to do something no matter how quirky it is it seems 'incredibly simple" to me as this site is for you but so far I have never had good luck just clicking on a link and downloading. I have no problem anywhere else getting files for my windows, ios or android device. I click the link here and it loops back around. there is no file to download this time. your reply is completely worthless.
I installed Apache_OpenOffice_4.0.1_Win_x86_install_en-GB on Windows 7 last autumn. Spell-check has stopped working. Thesaurus is not available. I have uninstalled and reinstalled OO to no effect.
In the 2014.01.01 version only old en_GB files have been replaced with newer ones.
Please try the following:
1) Remove the old English Dictionaries from the extension options in AOO 4.0.1
2) Exit AOO and its quickstarter
3) Double-click in dict-en-marcoagpinto-20140107.oxt and select OKAY to install it
4) Exit AOO and its quickstarter
5) Try opening AOO, select the whole text page with CTR+A and change the language to English UK at the bottom of the window
Does it work now?
downloaded upgrade as per desktop notification, attempted install as per instructions, version already appeared to be installed-? better dash handling and ligatures would be welcome. maybe yesterday's upgrade to mavericks os? ugh. ready to revert to typewriters or text writer for content, reserve form for indesign. ;) thanks for your volunteer labor contributions.
I've downloaded and followed the instructions, opening the .oxt file from inside of OpenOffice. After opening the .oxt file, the Extension Manager opens but is completely unresponsive. I can not click on or install any downloaded extensions. None of the buttons or any of the links work, including the close, update, or help buttons. I can minimize and work inside of AOO, but I'm assuming that means that none of the extensions are installed yet. Or I can force quit, but then the Extension Manager just opens back up and prompts me to update my extensions.
Is this a Mavericks issue? Performance of AOO has seemed remarkably sluggish since I updated to Mavericks. I, too, find myself using textedit a lot more. Not complaining, just wanting to report what's going on and to be part of a solution. Any ideas appreciated.
I only use AOO on Windows.
On Windows, when I double-click in the dictionaries .OXT it takes a few seconds before asking if we want to proceed, then some more time to install.
In the new 2014-01-01 version, only the en_GB dictionary has been updated.
I made it available both for Mozilla (Thunderbird, Firefox and SeaMonkey) and OpenOffice.
What's is the usual way to contribute new words to existing dictionaries?
Thanks,
Facundo
Ideally this should be contributed upstream. But, for better tracking, open an issue in Bugzilla https://issues.apache.org/ooo/ (you will need to register) and assign it to me: pescetti AT apache.org. Anything outside Bugzilla is likely to be ignored or lost.
My comment is the same as the above. The software refuses to accept the extension.
