Write it Right, Write it Better (WiR WiB) is a writing aid, an extension for OpenOffice.org. It is a plugin for WordNet® that provides online help by suggesting better options for a typed word and correct usage with examples. The extension works for both English as well as Hindi WordNet® and prompts synonym options to the user based on her locale settings. The purpose of this tool is to assist the users in writing impressively. It does not promote incomprehensible writing by using fancy words. The authors of the extension fully support simple writing styles and only want to encourage vocabulary enhancement by making this tool.

WiRWiB provides two levels of language assistance. First it suggests synonyms from the WordNet®. Secondly it also describes the correct usage of the words with examples. This information is obtained from the usage description and examples provided by WordNet®. WiRWiB does not require the user to explicitly invoke it for every typed word. Once enabled using a toggle button on the OpenOffice.org toolbar, it continues to query the WordNet® database and prompt the user with the usage and synonym information about the word. The prompts are non intrusive and do not interfere the user's work at hand.

WiRWiB is hence very unique in its persistent (user does not have to invoke it explicitly for every word) and non-intrusive way of providing writing assistance to users. Since a user might not be aware of the possibility of using a better word, it is a good idea to prompt the user with the available options.

Installation Instructions:

I've searched all over the app. But can't find the 'W' icon to use this extension. Can someone please tell me where it is? Thanks!!!!

I can't seem to get this to work on my windows 7 laptop. It has the newest version of Java and I followed the instructions, read the comments and watched the video. I followed all of their instructions and played around with the language settings. It still only brings up a blank window that doesn't respond. I'm thinking that perhaps this has to do with windows 7, but I can't be sure. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I could do?

Thanks a lot for creating this awesome extension.

The only problem that I had with it is that once you typed a word it just stayed there and didn't change to different words until you exited out. But this also can be fixed the same way by moving WirWiB up to the top and it will then go to each word that you type. If anybody else has this problem that is how to fix the problem.

Again thanks a lot for this awesome extension.

I've clicked on Extension manager and added this extension about 10 times now, but it does not show up under "Language >> Writing Aids".

Perhaps it's a Java thing, as when I went to Sun Java 6 (as per instructions) it asked me what platform I wanted it for but there was no Mac option.

Any thoughts?

I can not get WirWib to work in Ubuntu Lucid lynx it works great in Mint 9 the Mint equivalent of Ubuntu Lucid. Has anyone got WirWib to work in Ubuntu if so Could you show me your settings.

I also have WirWib working on Xp and Portableapps only Ubuntu it fails on.

Here is a link to a video I made on setting up WirWib:

I've installed WirWib in XP, Mint9 but can't get it to work in Ubuntu for some reason. Has anyone got WirWib to work with Ubuntu?

I did make a video of getting WirWib set up.

take out the spaces to use the link

Thanks for making that video. The new Wirwib version 0.1 works with OpenOffice.org 3.2 on Lucid

This sounds like a real cool extension and I really want to use it but I am having issues with it. Is it just ME?????? I am new to Open Office and extensions, but not to computers just to let you know. I followed your instructions to the T (4 times actually) but when I click on the icon to run it....I can expand the window, read the 'about' but for some reason I can not type in the actual box and nothing happens when I open a full document with writing (like one person commented on here about it searching through....AND WiR is actually listed at the TOP of language options). HA AM I missing something? Also, to let you know I had issues with other extensions to, so I uninstalled, AND have repaired my office, rebooted, and still there are 2 extensions I can not get to work (or only partially work). Of course, they would be the best f the best! ha ha. Just curious if there could be some issue with something on my machine? I have Java 6 (whatever the NEWEST is) and Open Office 3.1 . And your directions (THANK YOU BTW) could not be any more easy or direct, so I can't understand what is happening. Any solutions? I would really appreciate your help.

I had the same problem, but figured it out from a comment below.

Tools>Options>WritingAids>highlight WiRWiB>Move up

This did it for me.

I'm sorry, but I'm a little confused as to how to use this extension. I'm also new to Open Office, so that may be why. I read that you do not HAVE to invoke it explicitly for every word, but CAN you ask it to display a specific word on command? Also, when you open up a document that already has a lot of text, is there a way to get it to stop scanning the whole document for words to suggest, and just start at a certain point?

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you!

First of all, thank you for the nifty extension! It works like a charm, but there is a tiny quirk: it looks like WiRWiB must be the first entry in the Spellchecking section to function properly. However, moving WiRWiB to the top disables the context spelling suggestions.

Thanks. We will rectify that glitch in the next release. Hang on

Hi. I really want to use your plug-in. It sounds great and I use Artha on my Linux based laptop.

But for Windows (and for Linux), I would like an integrated way to use Wordnet. Your extension appears to do that very well.

However, I can't use it if it conflicts with the openoffice.org continuous spellchecker. Can you say if this issue has been fixed yet?

Many thanks for providing such a useful plug-in.
