Graecise is a macro for Openoffice.org Writer that facilitates the input of polytonic Greek characters.
Use Latin letters and common symbols for accents, spiritus etc. and convert them to Greek with the macro.
New feature: Since 0.9.1. Graecise comes bundled with ConCise - Write Greek on the fly.
Problems installing? If you have an older version of Graecise installed, try removing it via Tools → Extension Manager prior to installing the new version. This should work.
You can find more information on the Graecise Website.

Tested 0.9.1, 0.9.2 and 0.9.3 versions under both OpenOffice 3.2.1-11 (from main branch), LibreOffice 3.3.0~rc1-1 (from experimental branch) and Libreoffice 3.3.0-rc2 (from debs), but never activates!
Operative System: Debian Squeeze/Sid i686.
All tests were performed on clean profiles.
Thanks in advance.

A bit late, perhaps, but I have now bundled the .oxt with the extension "Basic Addon Builder", and on my system installing works now.
I hope it does so for you as well.

It was reported that the both small and capital rho with spiritus asper were missing. Those two letters were added. Nothing else was changed.

A new version of Graecise is out now.
A bug was fixed (")\A" would be converted to an A with spiritus asper and gravis instead of lenis and gravis). Seems like no one noticed it before. Well, it isn't that common. The only case I'm aware of is when there's an Αν in the meaning of Εαν at the beginning of a sentence.

New feature: Graecise is now bundled with ConCise, which lets you input Greek on the fly.
Click on "View all releases" → "0.9.1" for more information.

Since OpenOffice made the jump to 3.2, I too went from 0.7.1 straight to 0.8.0.
So, what's new?
Graecised text will have the new "Greek Ancient" language flag - thanks to Martin Srebotnjak for providing the necessary code.

If this causes trouble with older versions of OpenOffice you can still download version 0.7.1 under "view all releases" - the automatic change of the language to "Greek Ancient" was the only thing I changed.

... and brings to you a bugfix (accents on the "A" were broken) and reintroduces automatic end sigma.
I hope it doesn't introduce new bugs as well.

It's here. It's 2010, so I somewhat failed. On the other hand Graecise now does what I said I wanted it to do.
So you can now Graecise a single word by just running the macro after you've typed it or select a portion of text (should also work for letters in a word, but who would want to do something like that?) and Graecise it all in one go.

The new release nears completion - some quirks have still to be found and corrected:

New feature(s)

  • Select text portions and Graecise them in one go
  • Run Graecise the old way - don't select any text and it'll just Graecise the word you typed before

I personally would like this macro could work not only for a word but for example for all the highlight text.
My wife teaches Ancient Greek in an Italian school and she has to prepare tasks for students.
She would be quite helped if she could:
1. Prepare all the document using Latin words;
2. Select all the text she has to translate;
3. Run the macro.
For this kind of work translating one word a time like Graecise does is not useful.

IMHO another possibility is to integrate the macro somewhere in the menu od OOo. When you select the voice "Graecise" a window or something else appears with 3 choices:
a. translate the selected word
b. translate the selected paragraph
c. translate all the document

TIA if you would take into consideration this comment.

Hello, I have two wishes.

1) I would suggest another mode for Graecise - a "writing mode". It would work in this way:
- you activate the "writing mode" (with a keyboard shortcut)
- start typing and everything you type is directly typed/displayed in Greek letters
- you deactivate the "writing mode" (with the same keyboard shortcut as before).
Although this extension probably came to life as an alternative to such keyboard switches, I still think it would be great for some users to be available. Also, this change of keyboard would work only in the OOo apps, not system-wide, so user would really switch it on/off when needed.

2) I think Graecise needs to set the language attribute of converted (or in the above request, entered) text characters to "Greek, Ancient" that is available from 3.2 in OOo upon my request to developers (well, it is already in the 3.2 beta - m1 - so you can test it). That way all Ancient Greek text would get its proper language attribute.
If the Ancient Greek spell-check dictionary extension for OOo changes its language setting from Greek (there was no Ancient Greek in OOo before, so it used Greek as language code) to Ancient Greek, the Graecised text could then be automatically spell-checked. I already asked the author of Ancient Greek extension to deliver a new version of the extension with the new language setting.

Hope this makes sense. Lp, m.

As of yesterday 0.6.1 is out - so no more graecising whole paragraphs.

Sorry, but I downloaded 0.6.1 and updated 0.5.1 and now get errors because of "unknown status" of this extension - it can not be enabled, it is kept disabled. So this error is still present from 0.6, I would say.

For some reason the Package throws an error upon installing (at least on my computer).

Furthermore there is a bug in 0.6.0 that results in graecising whole paragraphs (you might actually like it).
I'll upload a fixed version later today. Until then you can fix it manually if you like either by preceding the text portion you want to be in Greek by →, or by altering the code:
Got to tools, macros, organize macros, my macros, Graecise.
Click "edit".

Change the line
"Do While aString "→" and textCursor.isStartOfParagraph() = false"
to
"Do While aString " " and textCursor.isStartOfParagraph() = false"

Sorry about the inconvenience.

Hello, the license of this plugin is still not specified on this site (it says "License: notspecified"). This might turn away those who do not want to use proprietary software, so I suggest you specify your software license.
Anyway, good work!

Fixed. Thanks.

I have noticed a (bug/ feature) that prevents in text capital vowels from being converted to Greek.
Typing:
Anakreon will work and give you the correct graecised word (with spiritus lenis)
but typing anything in front of Anakreon like
Xaire Anakreon will not only fail to give you an alpha with spiritus lenis but also fail to convert the A or any other capital letter to the Greek equivalent.

This bug only occurs if you forget to put ANY correct "accent" in front of the capital letter.
Xaire )Anakreon
will work.

Released now. Get it while it is hot.

Upon installing this extension on OSX the Extension Manager shows error "Could not obtain path to license. Possible error in description.xml". Also, your extension listing does not list the license type, so obviously it must be missing from the description.xml or there are errors in its notation. Hope you fix this soon.

Hello,
thank you for pointing that one out. I fixed this in version 0.5.1
