You can solve problems which can be described by an objective function assuming its optimal value (that is the maximal or the minimal value or a pre-defined value). The extension computes which values the variables of the objective function takes the optimal value for, that is we can determine what the best decision is, within the framework of a particular model.

]]> EuroOffice Solver is an extension to the spreadsheet program which provides help in solving problems occuring in economics, education, finance or in planning every day life tasks. You can solve problems which can be described by an objective function assuming its optimal value (that is the maximal or the minimal value or a pre-defined value). The extension computes which values the variables of the objective function takes the optimal value for, that is we can determine what the best decision is, within the framework of a particular model.

Compared to the previous version, significant improvements have been made. Now a wider range of problems can be solved and using the extension has become simpler and more convenient.

We may use two different solver engines in the Professional version:

  • EuroOffice Linear Solver which uses the original simplex algorithm of OpenOffice for solving linear problems.
  • EuroOffice Nonlinear Solver which allows one to solve a wide range of nonlinear optimization problems. Any built-in function of EuroOffice Calc can be used for both definining the objective function and the constraints. When there are no constraints then the program uses the Nelder-Mead algorithm and it uses the SLSQP algorithm for constrained problems (D. Kraft: TOMP -- FORTRAN Modules for Optimal Control Calculations, Düsseldorf, 1991).

The default solver engine is the Nonlinear Solver. However , for speed, it's worth switching to the Linear Solver for complex, linear problems with many variables or constraints.

There are no particular limitations for the constraints and these can be specified in the dialog box simply enough. Both the left and right side of constraints may be a cell or cell range reference which may include arbitrary functions as well. The right side may be a constant value, too. The operators in the constrains may be <=, =, >=, Integer, Binary.

A set of examples, containing well-known problems from textbooks and real life, also helps the user besides the online help.

A free version of EuroOffice Solver is also available. The free version (EuroOffice Solver) provides only the Linear Solver engine, but is equivalent with the Professional version in everything else.
